A crash course highlighting draft day trade rumors

Over the past several weeks, and especially the last week, we’ve swallowed more than a mouthful of trade rumors; some legitimate, some seemingly pulled out of thin air. All of them — the eight we deemed most likely, at least — with links to the reported stories and all the details, are listed below in a summary format.

San Diego to deal Turner to undisclosed team

Breaking news from The Tennessean states that the San Diego Chargers have agreed to a deal with a team interested in running back Michael Turner.

Chargers re-sign running back Michael Turner to one-year deal

ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli reports that the San Diego Chargers have opted to re-sign Michael Turner as LaDainian Tomlinson’s shadow, er, backup.

Chiefs deny trade rumors involving Johnson

Kansas City spokesman Bob Moore is trying to dispel rumors that the Chiefs are trying to trade running back Larry Johnson.

Packers make an offer for Pro Bowl running back Larry Johnson

The Green Bay Packers have reportedly made an offer to acquire running back Larry Johnson from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Larry Johnson trade talks? Adam Schefter says so

Rotoworld reports that NFL Network’s Adam Schefter has confirmed that the Chiefs have had “general trade discussions” regarding Larry Johnson with the Browns, Bills, Titans, and Packers. Interesting, because

Turner not likely not be traded to Buffalo

Michael TurnerThe Democrat and Chronicle reports that a trade between Buffalo and San Diego for Michael Turner is not likely to happen because of “complexities.”

“There’s nothing new to report right now,” Bills GM Marv Levy said during a luncheon with reporters at Ralph Wilson Stadium discussing next weekend’s NFL draft. “There are so many complexities to the deal, that if it’s done, I’ve got to tell you, it would be a surprise.”

Patriots agree to deal with Tory James

Boston.com reports a deal that will send Cincinnati corner Tory James to New England for one season. The Patriots have been rumored to be seeking the veteran’s services for some time now. The Green Bay Packers were also rumored to be seeking James.

This deal effectively gives New England a durable starting defensive back (he’s started every game for the past four seasons), although his age is of some concern. However, being a 34 year old, it’s no surprise the Patriots didn’t want to sign him past one season. Expect Belichick to make the most of the veteran’s abilities, especially with Asante Samuel’s future in New England on the edge.

Breaking news; Turner trade deemed unlikely

The Tennessean reports that there may not be a trade to send San Diego’s Michael Turner anywhere.

“As of right now, it looks like Michael is going to be in San Diego,” Turner’s agent Bus Cook said.

This is news that has direct implications on both the draft and Corey Dillon’s stock. The latter has been waiting for Turner to find a deal before making a move, but this news is going to make suitors that much more desperate to land a running back before the draft. Not that it won’t be Turner; it’s still possible a team will make an offer that the Chargers will not refuse. But for the moment, let’s assume a Turner deal isn’t made.

Lynch to visit Packers next week

PackersNews.com reports that draft prospect Marshawn Lynch is scheduled for a visit with Green Bay next week. Lynch, who played running back at Cal, was a Heisman candidate last season when he combined (rushing/receiving) for 1684 yards and 15 scores. He is widely considered the second best running back in the draft, behind phenom Adrian Peterson.

Green Bay could use a running back after losing long-time Packer Ahman Green earlier this offseason. Lynch runs strong but lacks elusiveness, one of his main criticisms. But he could definitely help out the Packers, who pick 16th overall.

But he may not necessarily fall that far. Despite not being a top 20 overall prospect in some minds, there are other teams with even more pressing needs at the running back position: Buffalo and Tennessee, neither of which have much chance of seeing Peterson slip to where they pick at 12 and 19, respectively.
