In their shoes: Cleveland Browns picking 3rd

The Cleveland Browns have had one winning season since they rejoined the league in 1999, a mediocre 9-7 record in 2002. Since 1999, they have shuffled between 3 head coaches, 5 quarterbacks (in the past five years!), 6 leading rushers, and 5 leading receivers.

They have ranked above 20th overall offensively (points and yards) only once in that span (2002) and have ranked worse than 25th in both categories each of the past four seasons. In fact, the Browns have won only 19 games over the past four seasons, a pathetic .300 record.

But they hope to change their luck in 2007, a rebirth if you will.

Offense is what the team will draft this season, the third in Romeo Crennel’s tenure as the head coach. They will look closely at where their needs will be best filled, either at quarterback, running back, or wide receiver. In fact, three major players could be on the board when Cleveland drafts; it’s time to analyze their options.

Culpepper’s future with the Dolphins is uncertain

The Miami Herald reports that quarterback Daunte Culpepper’s future in Miami is not set in stone. Culpepper is still nursing from a knee surgery and has now revealed that it could take at least 2 more months before his recovery nears its end.

Unfortunately for the team, however, Daunte Culpepper is the only quarterback on the team — at this point — qualified to start when the season begins. Last season’s starter more most of the season, Joey Harrington, has left for Atlanta where he will begin next season backing up Michael Vick.

Cleveland eyes Trent Green

Full story at Cleveland.com:

The Browns are apparently ready to step up their pursuit of Chiefs quarterback Trent Green.

Browns General Manager Phil Savage told WTAM AM/1100 on Thursday morning that the next step is to negotiate a “ballpark contract” for Green that would prompt him to want to come to Cleveland for a visit.

Green’s agent, Jim Steiner, declined to comment Thursday night on possible negotiations - but also didn’t deny that they’ve begun.

Trent Green’s only real expected suitor, until now, has been Miami. His frequent visits and talks with the team created the expectation that he would end up with the Dolphins. The only thing that actually held up the trade was Green’s contract. The 36 year old veteran is due $7.2, $7.7 and $9.2 million over the next three seasons; Miami is currently $10M under its salary cap while Cleveland began the off-season $26M under and can afford the contract Green demands.

Cleveland receives visit from Brady Quinn

Full story at The Red Zone:

Quinn, who grew up in Dublin, Ohio, has said he wants to play for the Browns, the team he rooted for as a kid. On Thursday, he spent a few hours touring the team’s headquarters and interviewing with coaches.

He arrived in Cleveland on Wednesday night and was taken to dinner by club officials.

The Browns have the No. 3 pick in this month’s NFL draft, and they could use it to select Quinn, regarded as the second-best QB prospect behind LSU’s JaMarcus Russell.

Russell visited the Browns on Wednesday as did Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson, another player who could wind up with Cleveland.

Quick Reference: Stingiest fantasy football defenses — Quarterbacks

Rex Grossman felt pressure from defenses last season

NFL defenses do not willfully give up yards. Ever. Fortunately, some defenses are worse than others, which is why teams can sometimes score at will.

As a fantasy owner, you should have a pretty good idea of which defenses are the weakest and which are the most overwhelming. The following is a list of all 32 defenses, in order of strength.
