Biography

Strengths: Possesses prototypical NFL quarterback size. Is tall with adequate bulk and room on his frame to add 10 more pounds. Displays very good arm strength (just a notch below elite level such as JaMarcus Russell and Michael Vick). Can drive the ball downfield vertically and can fit the ball into tight spots in the intermediate passing game. Gets good zip on deep out throws. Is seeing more of the field and his overall decision making skills were vastly improved in 2006. Has good mobility, especially for his tall frame. Gets set quickly, shows the initial quickness to avoid pressure in the pocket and he has enough speed to consistently run for first downs if unaccounted for. Runs hard and isn’t afraid to lower his shoulder. Is comfortable throwing on the run. Is tough; will stand in the pocket and take a hit when following through on a throw when necessary. He has been durable throughout his career. Weaknesses: Needs to prove 2006 season was not a fluke. Made huge strides during that season but still has room to grow mentally as a quarterback. Must continue to develop as a leader. Still a bit streaky as a passer. Has some trouble with throws that require touch, particularly laying the ball in-between LB’s and DB’s in cover-2 or cover-3 looks. When he misses the strike zone it tends to be high. Has a tendency to hold onto the football too long. Needs to do a better job of reading coverages while dropping. Doesn’t always show great touch on dump-off throws and screens. Has too many short throws batted down at the line. He gets happy feet in the pocket, pats the ball a lot when he doesn’t know where to go with it and will telegraph some of his throws, as a result. He trusts his arm too much at times and tries to fit the ball into tight spots that he shouldn’t, especially when under duress. Has some trouble controlling the ball at times and doesn’t always seem comfortable selling pump fakes.
Overview: Woodson was redshirted in 2003. During his first three seasons (2004-’06) he played in 31 games (25 starts) and completed 464 passes on 760 attempts (61.0 percent) for 5,651 yards with 39 touchdowns compared to 14 interceptions. Woodson has also rushed for two touchdowns. Woodson experienced significant struggles early in his career before the light finally came on for him as a junior in 2006, when he threw 24 more touchdowns (31) than interceptions (7) after tossing as many interceptions as touchdowns during his sophomore season in 2005. Woodson has prototypical size, excellent arm strength and above-average mobility for a bigger quarterback. If he continues to see the entire field and limit his mistakes as senior, Woodson will be in the mix as one of the top-three quarterbacks to come off the board in 2008.
