Westbrook Cut by Philly

by Tom Van Wyhe on February 23, 2010

The Philadelphia Eagles released running back Brian Westbrook Tuesday, amid rumors the team would part ways with him some time this offseason. Westbrook, the Eagles’ all time leading rusher, is a versatile running back with a history of injuries. He missed eight games in 2009 and finished just third on the team in rushing yards.

Westbrook should find a new team this offseason, but he probably won’t be a starter. He and LaDainian Tomlinson are the two highest profile running backs in this offseason’s free agent class; both have seen a dip in production, but it’s hard to pick one over the other in terms of risk. While Tomlinson hasn’t dealt with as much injury, his overall numbers have slid significantly the past two seasons. Meanwhile, Westbrook has shown he can still play at a very high level, scoring 14 touchdowns just two seasons ago, but the injuries hurt his stock.

In Westbrook’s absence, the Eagles’ likely starting running back will be second-year back LeSean McCoy. Fullback Leonard Weaver will also get a fair number of touches after an outstanding season in 2009. McCoy and Weaver combined for 225 carries, 960 yards, and six rushing touchdowns, but don’t be surprised if the Eagles spend a mid-round draft pick on another versatile running back. They need the depth, and McCoy hasn’t quite proven he can handle a full load in the Eagles offense.
