San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan has been on the hot seat since his 49ers failed to deliver last season, but his tenure with the team may soon be coming to a close. ESPN’s Michael Smith has reported that Nolan will be fired next week, and his replacement will be Mike Singletary, the 49ers linebackers coach and assistant head coach.
Nolan, who has coached the 49ers since 2005, has a career 18-36 overall record and zero postseason berths. Perhaps his greatest weakness has been the inability of San Francisco to produce a franchise quarterback, despite drafting Alex Smith as the first overall pick in 2005. Smith has since played just one complete season as the starter, and he was replaced with J.T. O’Sullivan this season.
The 49ers are 2-4 this season and have lost three consecutive games.
