When the Denver Broncos hit the field Sunday it will be without two key starters: running backs Selvin Young and tight end Tony Scheffler. Mike Shanahan informed the media earlier today and that the players’ groin injuries will keep them off the field when the Broncos play the Jaguars at home.
Young is the team’s leading rusher, though he has not by any stretch been the clear-cut starter. This season he leads the team with 47 carries, but that accounts for just a bit over one-third of the team’s 130 total attempts. His yard per carry average, however, has remained impressive as he tends to gain 5.7 yards per rush attempt. Unfortunately, Michael Pittman has been the team’s goal line back. Pittman has four rushing touchdowns this season, compared to Young’s one.
Scheffler, meanwhile, has definitely been the targeted tight end through the first five games. A natural receiver, Scheffler has 16 catches for 259 yards and 2 touchdowns this season. He is third among all tight ends in receiving yards this season (behind Jason Witten and Chris Cooley, who, not surprisingly, have 19 and 9 more receptions this season, respectively) and is tied for second in touchdowns. His 16.2 yard per catch average leads all tight ends (counting only those with more than five receptions) is 14th in the NFL among all positions (counting only those with at least 10 receptions).
