Brett Favre

Since word broke that Brett Favre would like to wear an NFL jersey one more season - even if that jersey doesn’t have a green and gold color scheme - there has been a constant stream of newspaper editorials, ESPN analysis, and blog talk. It seems that every person who follows professional football has an opinion on whether Favre should return, stay put, play for the Packers, or consider a new franchise.

Sifting through all this would be overwhelming, which is why I have gone through the trouble for you. Contained below are snippets of blogs and online newspaper “clippings” from all over the web which discuss every viewpoint, every angle. Enjoy.

What the #%!@ is Green Bay Thinking?!

“What in the world is Green Bay thinking? If Favre wants to play one more season and give the Packers another shot at a Super Bowl, how can management not want that to happen?”

- Tim Cowlishaw (Dallas Morning News)

Ted Thompson Nuts?

“The Packers are nuts not to want him back.”

- Jim Souhan (Star-Tribune)

One Angry Rant

Seriously, so Favre changed his mind about retiring. Big deal. He’s earned that right. He’s earned the right to do just about anything he wants. The Packers are handling the whole thing shamefully.”

- Tom Powers (TwinCities.com)

Favre is Not Bigger than the Packers

However unintentional, Favre’s return pits one star player against a small-town team. No player will ever be bigger than the Packers, who have won 12 NFL titles, six since 1961. I’m not even sure apple pie, hot dogs and Chevrolet are bigger than the Packers. Lombardi, maybe.

- Mike Klis (Denver Post)

Think Before You Sign Elsewhere, Favre

“Favre is a national celebrity. His image and persona are inextricably tied to the Packers. If he signs with another team, he risks damage to his reputation and image in the state where he became famous.”

- Don Walker (Milwaukee Jounal-Sentinel)

So, Is Whitlock Dense?

“I think that you’d have to be a little dense to think that Favre has been wanting to leave Green Bay since they spent a first round pick on Aaron Rodgers. A happy camper doesn’t alienate their backup unless they are a little insecure with the message being sent with his acquisition. The message that Favre got at the time was, ‘The door is now open for you to retire.’”

- Rob Calonge (MVN)

Favre has Wanted Out for a While, Now

“Brett ‘Kobe Bryant’ Favre has wanted out of Green Bay for at least three years. And the Packers have wanted to cut ties with their moody and emotional superstar for the same length of time. Fortunately for football fans, the Packers and Favre are stuck with each other.”

- Jason Whitlock (Kansas City Star)

Why is this So Difficult for the Packers?

“… the choice is (relatively) easy. Let him come back to the active roster and give him his job back. It’s what the fans want.”

- The Scores Report

Time to Move On

“I know I’m going to take some heat for this, but the Packers don’t need Brett Favre anymore. … I’m ready for the Aaron Rodgers era to begin in Green Bay, and I’m sure he is too.”

- extremebrian (Yardbarker Blogger)

Why the Vikings Should Acquire Favre

“Memo to Vikings owner Zygi Wilf: ‘You want a stadium, put Favre in a Vikings uniform.’”

- Sid Hartman (Star-Tribune)

Why Favre Should Not Play for the Vikings (Or Bears)

“Playing for any old NFL team would be crime enough to many of his faithful, but playing for a rival like Minnesota or Chicago would be like Johnny Damon spurning the Red Sox for the Yankees. Times five.”

- Peter King (SI)

Why the Eagles Should Acquire Favre

“His interceptions are much more graceful than A.J. Feely’s.”

- Eagles Gab

Teams Considering Favre, Beware: Don’t Let History Repeat

“Anybody remember a guy by the name of Joe Montana who attempted to keep his career alive with Kansas City? Results: two playoff appearances, two playoff wins, 25 starts, and a quarterback rating no higher than 87.4. Note the number of Super Bowls - zero.”

- Cat Crave

Favre Being Selfish?

“At this point I can only believe Brett Favre is more concerned with his personal legacy instead of helping a team win a Super Bowl.”

- Moon Dog Sports

An Interesting Suggestion

“Why not let Favre play one game for every team, at least in the NFC? That’s 16 games, 16 teams. Let him have a last farewell tour, letting each city get its little piece of Favre and Favre his little share of them. Even if it is just one series, or as a holder on kicks.”

- Bernie Lincicome (Rocky Mountain News)

  1. Thanks for the link to my post. I find it interesting that most in the professional media haven’t called Favre out for his actions. They all seem to be coddling this guy when he should be admonished for his actions.

That’s why I blog and don’t read professional journalists.

Thanks again for the link - I really appreciate it.

  2. Hey Tom! Nice to see a post from you again, and it comes as no surprise that it’s about Favre.

As you know and even though I’m a Bears fan, I always respected Favre. But this right here could damage his reputation in the eyes of many people. I do agree with MoonDog that the media is on the same side of the issue for the most part though.

Take care buddy and great post!

  3. MoonDog - No problem. I enjoyed your article and am happy I was able to link to it on this post.

David - Wow, long time no talk! By the way, I didn’t realize you started a blog - I’ll have to check it out. I’m sure it’s worth a read!

To everyone else reading this: The NFL Minute is officially starting back up again, as of this post. The site has been redesigned (check out the homepage if you haven’t already) and I’m about to begin writing on a daily basis again.

    Thanks for reading!

  4. That’s good news. I love football and the majority of my posts will be covering the worlds of college and pro football in the near future. I’ll write a lot about the Cowboys and the Tennessee Vols. I can’t for the season to start.

I’ll add your site to my link section.

    Take it easy.

  5. Cool. I’ll be covering the NFL and fantasy football with daily articles (that’s the hope, at least). And in the spirit of reciprocity, I’ll add you to my friends list (located at NFLminute.com/friends/). I look forward to reading your stuff!

  6. Brett Favre has verbally retired in march’ but has never signed any official paperwork that resigns him from the NFL. It should be quite clear to any human with the ability to think and process information that this is nothing but a publicity stunt that has benefits to a lot of individuals. Why should he sign any reinstaitment papers? He does not have too!!!
