Team Needs: Chicago Bears

What You Say: Quarterback

What I Say: Offensive Line, Wide Receiver, Safety

Unlike most fans, I don’t think that the Bears greatest need is at quarterback. Rex Grossman is still a relatively inexperienced and young quarterback at roughly the same stage of development as a player like Matt Leinart (considering actual game time — Grossman, as most will remember, had a history of injuries).

But the team does have other issues on offense. The Bears struggled for the first time in years to run the ball effectively and the quarterback, whether it was Griese or Grossman or Orton, had little time in the pocket. That reflects on the offensive line. Meanwhile, tackle Fred Miller and guard Ruben Brown are both nearing the end of their career. Clearly, the Bears should do something in the draft to acquire some new talent on the line.

At wide receiver the Bears most notable name is Bernard “I can’t catch a pass when it matters” Berrian. And he’s a free agent. Muhsin Muhammad is nearing the tail end of his career and doesn’t have many good seasons left in the tank.

Finally, the Bears defense was very unimpressive in 2007. It finished 30th in interceptions, so improving the defensive backfield could do wonders. Adam Archuleta is simply not a good safety. He offers fairly good run support at this point in his career, but he may have been the worst starting safety in the NFL this season. Simply put, he can’t cover.

harsh, here is the deal…
archuleta is a LB without size. they put him at safety to fly around the field in run support. he isnt the “worst safety in the league” but you can’t depend on him to cover physical TEs or WRs. As soon as mike brown went out, they had to put him into coverage more, then he broke his hand, that didnt help. Then all the other injuries in their secondary, they benched him in favor of someone who isnt a better player, but has better coverage instincts.
I think they need to get a backup for the everhurt Mike Brown before they need a backup for Archuleta.
i think u have this opinion for a certain reason… and that reason will go unnamed

I think you hit the nail on the head with the offensive line. Olin Kreutz is the only solid blocked day in and day out. As I’m sure you know now, Fred Miller has been released, oh happy day! But the Bears simply need to go out and spend some free agent money on big name O-line, i.e. Alan Faneca, whom I believe is a free agent this year. They could also spend their draft pick on another O-lineman. Grossman isn’t great, but could develop into a good QB given some more time in the pocket (his greatest weakness is decision making under duress). Is Benson the answer, I don’t know, but it comes back to the O-line again. He is a downhill runner and if there isn’t a hole then he is running into the backs of his line that was supposed to make a gap for him, thus averaging about 3.5 yds a carry. Next issue wide outs…they just released Muhammad, which I wasn’t too happy about, he is a solid possession receiver or out of the slot. But Berrian shouldn’t be kept, because of the outrageous price he will desire. Draft, free agency, and Bradley should help them out at this position, in addition to getting more practice for Hester at WR in camp. Onto the defense, last year they released a lot of D-line because they were deep at most positions, but it hurt them b/c of injury. The Bears D has been very injury prone. A healthy D doesn’t have many holes, but might with the loss of a key player in Briggs. Maybe an aging Zach Thomas to move to OLB… It’ll be interesting to see what kind of off season moves they make.

As the key free agents have come and gone my bears have done nothing. now us loyal fans have to rely on the draft. It is no secet that the bears need to revamp their oline. but i still think their early draft needs come at quarterback and runnin back. i say that because this is one of the deepest drafts ever when it comes to o-lineman and the bears are one of the best at finding late round gems in the first round i would go at rashard mendenhall if he is there n use benson as a short yardage back. then in a later round i would go for andre woodson, i think he would be productive in the bears dink n dunk system but still has a cannon arm to throw that play action bomb ron turner loves. the bears line still wont be the best but woodson is very strong in the pocket. and mendenhall is quick with a non stop motor who legs don’t stop until the whistle is blown. comment i want to know what others think cause no sport shows talk about da bears
