Baltimore and Brian Billick

As the Baltimore Ravens inch closer to a top five pick in the NFL Draft, questions concerning Brian Billick’s job security are raised. The Ravens coach has one of the longest tenures with one team in the current NFL — eight seasons (T-4th) — but after the Ravens endured perhaps the most painful loss this season, dropping a game to the previously winless Miami Dolphins, Billick has slid deeper onto the hotseat.

But are the team’s lack of successes as of late enough to can the coach who led the Ravens to a 13-3 record and a first round bye in the postseson?

No. At least not in my mind. And I’m sure the Ravens front office feels the same.

Brian Billick is many things — mostly noted for his arrogance — but perhaps most importantly he’s a great coach. He wins games. And he does it with teams that are perhaps inferior to opponents.

Besides, last season was only the third time in his 8-year career the team finished with a record below .500. Don’t expect them to be picking in the top five any time after 2007 if he keeps his position as head coach.

  1. Billick is a terrible coach, particularly when it comes to disciplining his team, calling plays and managing the clock. But he’s great at riding the coattails of the decade’s greatest defense. Too bad that ride is nearing its end.

  2. I’m not sure I’d go as far as to say Billick is a terrible coach, but it has been surprising throughout his career with the Ravens his offenses are not more productive. That is certainly partly due to the lack of talent - he had much more when he was a coordinator with the record-setting Vikings - but it’s still interesting.

  3. With the current coaching / interviewing / hiring / firing carousel in full rotation, I would hope that (should Jerry Jones let Jason Garrett get away) Jones give Brian Billick the offensive coordinator job.
Free agency is not just for players anymore! Coaching staffs get raided also!
The Dallas offense wouldn’t miss a beat and in my opinion improve with Billick calling the plays.
