Vince Young’s Quad Update: It’s Not Serious

Vince Young has been nursing a sore quad for some time now, since mid-October, in fact. And during last night’s game against the Denver Broncos, he apparently bruised that same quad on a play that technically didn’t happen.

If you watched the game, you probably remember. If not, you’re probably a little confused, so let me fill you in: early in the third quarter, Tennessee was driving down the field and on one play — a designed quarterback sweep — Vince Young dove for the endzone and attempted to stretch the ball beyond the pylon to score. The referee on the scene said he was a yard short, so the Titans lined up to run another play.

While Young and his teammates broke huddle and lined up, Jeff Fisher was indecisive as to whether or not to challenge the previous play. On the other side of the ball, Denver’s defense didn’t like what it saw, so a linebacker tried to signal timeout before the snap of the ball.

In the midst of indecisiveness and confusion, the Titans snapped the ball and the play — which would afterwards be negated because of the timeout — was a broken one because some of Tennessee’s linemen apparently heard the whistle which should have blown the play dead. Unfortunately, Denver’s defense didn’t hear it, so they chased Young down and eventually he was knocked out of bounds when he took a helmet to his quad.

Because that play didn’t actually happen, Fisher was able to challenge the previous play which was then ruled a touchdown. Young, however, was writhing on the sideline in pain as cameras zoomed in on his strained face. The trainers looked at him and he was able to return on the team’s next possession, and ultimately finish the game.

We now know the quad was bruised on the play, at least in the words of Jeff Fisher.

“No, he came back and worked it out. It was the same leg, but it was more of a contusion than it was a strain,” Fisher said. A contusion is a bruise.

It’s good news for Tennessee fans, especially those who watched the game. The only adverse effect is that Young will be held back in practice this week. He will, however, be healthy enough to play in Sunday’s game.
