It might have been one deep pass, but that just might be enough for Grossman to take back his starting spot with the Chicago Bears. A 59-yard bomb to Bernard Berrian meant the go-ahead score for Chicago on a day when neither Oakland nor the Bears could get any offense going and it seemed as if a 6-3 outcome was probable.
But Grossman’s one monster throw of the day — he was 7-14 for 142 yards and 1 score in the game — kept the Bears’ season alive.
“It was unbelievable, something you can’t describe to someone who hasn’t been in that position,” Grossman said. “It’s a great feeling to come in and be able to pull one out.”
And it came after Brian Griese left the game with a shoulder injury. The severity of the injury may not matter, as the team has struggled with Griese in the pocket since he took over. His 9 interception-10 touchdown season is hardly more impressive than Grossman and .400 winning percentage isn’t all that great, either.
Granted, Grossman’s numbers aren’t pretty to look at. He’s thrown only 2 touchdowns to 6 interceptions, but most of those came in two games this season. Still, his mistakes have crippled the Bears in the past and it led to Lovie Smith caving to the media and benching him. Grossman was the scapegoat who took the fall for a team that had more problems than it was willing to admit.
“I hope people appreciate that Rex hasn’t shut it down,” Kreutz said. “He hasn’t moped around our building. He’s kept himself prepared and ready to play. I hope it shows a lot of people what everybody on this team already knew about Rex. He’s still a professional, and he’s still going to be ready to win.”
