The city of Philadelphia is losing patience with Donovan McNabb and the relationship between the two continues to worsen. This is not a city known for its love, not when it comes to sports. These fans are die-hards — the best kind — but there comes a point when you need to relax and not call for a rookie quarterback to replace your franchise quarterback.
But that’s the case. As one’s career nears its end, another is ready to step up (sort of). Kevin Kolb is no Donovan McNabb, at least not yet. His mechanics are still maturing, as is his adjustment to the pro game. Is he ready? No. But fans don’t care. They want to see Kolb step in and lead the team to the promised land.
“It’s easy to blame the quarterback when the team loses, but I’m definitely not the whole reason why we lost these games,” McNabb told reporters in a news conference Wednesday. “I can definitely help, yes, I can. But I [shouldn't get] blamed for everything that goes on around here.”
Chicago Bears fans: keep an eye on this as this unfolds. As Philadelphia calls for McNabb’s head, cheer with them. McNabb might not be the elite quarterback he once was, but he’s still better than Brian Griese or Rex Grossman. He’s certainly better than Kyle Orton. And don’t forget that the Bears’ front office hasn’t had the best luck drafting quarterbacks in the past. Ever.
McNabb might be the player Chicago needs to make the leap. Of course, quarterback isn’t the team’s only problem, but adding a player of his caliber to throw the football certainly will help the otherwise lackluster offense. The threat he brings to the table could open up the running game, something the team hasn’t had this season.
Who knows? Maybe the Bears could have a good quarterback for the first time since the 1980s, when Jim McMahon and his sunglasses ruled. Maybe.
