Najeh Davenport

Some might help you in fantasy football, others might make you laugh. Either way, here are a ton of interesting facts through the first 6 weeks of the NFL season:

Through week 6, Adrian Peterson is leading the NFL in rushing yardage per game by nearly 20 yards despite being ranked 12th in average carries per game. Not surprisingly, his 6.3 yard per carry average is better than any other runner with at least 40 carries this season.

Najeh Davenport of Pittsburgh is averaging 7.5 yards per carry with 28 carries this season. He also has three touchdowns.

Cedric Benson of Chicago has the worst yard per carry average (3.1) of any running back averaging at least 16 carries per game. And he’s fumbled three times, most among running backs in the NFL. Maybe it wasn’t all Grossman’s fault after all…

Frank Gore, despite all the expectations, is averaging a meager 3.6 yards per carry this season.

Despite playing for one of the league’s most pass-happy offenses, DeShawn Wynn of Green Bay is tied for third in the NFL with 4 rushing touchdowns. He’s had double digit carries this season only 4 times and his season highs came weeks 5 and 6 when he carried the ball 13 times each.

LaDainian Tomlinson has the only perfect quarterback rating this season, a 158.3.

Tom Brady’s 128.9 rating is better than any other quarterback with at least 100 tosses this season. Second? Peyton Manning with a 108.6. Seems cream continues to rise to the top of the NFL.

Here are two quarterbacks you probably didn’t expect to be in the NFL’s top 5 in rating this year: among quarterbacks with at least 100 attempts, David Garrard and Jeff Garcia rank 3 and 4 with a 104.7 and 103.6, respectively.

Tom Brady has thrown 21 touchdowns this season and only 2 interceptions. For those of you doing the math, that puts him on pace for 56 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions this season.

Interestingly, Peyton Manning also has only 2 interceptions this season.

The best touchdown-interception ratio among quarterbacks with at least 500 passing yards this season: David Garrard has thrown 6 touchdowns and no interceptions. Second place goes to Jeff Garcia with 5 touchdowns and no interceptions.

The worst touchdown-interception ratio among quarterbacks with at least 1000 passing yards this season: Drew Brees has thrown only 3 touchdowns vs. 9 interceptions.

Jon Kitna threw the longest touchdown pass this season: a 91 yarder.

The shortest long pass for a quarterback with at least 100 attempts: Chad Pennington has topped out at 29 yards this season.

No one in the NFL has been sacked more than Jon Kitna. He’s carried the ball to the turf 25 times this season, 5 more than Donovan McNabb.

Poor Charlie Frye. His pass attempt-sack ratio is 2-1. Worse yet: Kevin Kolb. He hasn’t even thrown a pass yet this season, but he’s still been sacked twice.

Wes Welker and Randy Moss rank 6 and 4 in receptions this season, but they aren’t the only tandem in the NFL in the top 10 in receptions this season: TJ Houshmandzadeh and Chad Johnson rank 2nd and 8th.

The best yard per reception average among wide receivers with at least 20 catches: Braylon Edwards, averaging 19 yards per catch with 29 catches. He also ranks 2nd in the NFL in touchdown receptions with 7, one behind Randy Moss’s 8.

Logan Mankins is averaging -9 yards per reception. Interestingly, he plays for New England. More interesting: he’s the team’s guard.

Matt Stover has attempted 21 field goals this season (made 18), 4 more than Kris Brown (ranks 2nd) and 9 more than Jay Feely (ranks 3rd).

Only 3 kickers this season have attempted at least 20 extra points. You probably aren’t surprised that the first two play for New England and Dallas, but do you know who ranks third? Phil Dawson of Cleveland has hit 20 of 20 this season.

It’s not as automatic as you might think. 5 extra points have been blocked this season. The kicker with the most blocks: Adam Vinatieri of Indianapolis has had 2 blocked.
