In some slightly surprising news, Lane Kiffin is expected to name Josh McCown the Oakland Raiders’ starting quarterback for the team’s season opener. The apparent reasoning behind the move is starting McCown because he has more experience than Daunte Culpepper in the team’s system.
But the naming of McCown will not mean he has a guaranteed starting spot week in and out. Culpepper has superior talent and if McCown suffers through some early season defeats, Culpepper could see playing time in the near future.
Until then, fantasy owners should probably steer clear of Oakland’s quarterbacks. This report is from Adam Schefter, though other sources believe Culpepper has the edge. Either way, it’s best to sit back and watch the Silver and Black against a relatively weak defense (Detroit) and find out how the offensive line responds.
Note: Kiffin will probably report the official starter later this week.
