Raiders starting quarterback job is still up for grabs

Andrew Walter SackedThe Oakland Raiders have two preseason games left, but no decision has been made as to who will be the starting quarterback when the regular season rolls around.

“Yeah, I think it definitely is (unusual),” Kiffin said in a Sunday teleconference. “We’d love to have (a starter) right now, but we don’t.”

This is coming from a team that struggled between two incompetent quarterbacks last season. The combination of Andrew Walter and Aaron Brooks — and a porous offensive line that allowed 72 sacks — equated to just under 2800 yards passing, 6 — yes, six — passing touchdowns, and 21 interceptions.

Projected to be the team’s starter is Daunte Culpepper, but he hasn’t taken a snap with the starting offense yet. Josh McCown was originally projected to start before Culpepper came to town, but now it appears that even Andrew Walter will pass him on the depth chart. JaMarcus Russell, meanwhile, may not get one snap his rookie season, according to NFL Network’s Adam Schefter.

Basically, it’s a three-way race for the starting spot. As the San Francisco Chronicle pointed out, “No one is winning the job, and no one is eliminating himself from consideration.”

If you’re drafting in an incredibly deep league — or you need to start two quarterbacks — Daunte Culpepper is the only consideration in Oakland. He has potential in Oakland, but hardly enough to justify picking him higher than as a QB3, or QB2 in very, very deep leagues.

“Daunte has done a great job and really is performing well,” Kiffin said. “He couldn’t be more serious about winning this job.”
