It appears Vinny Testaverde will be lacing up his cleats for at least one more season, resigning with the New England Patriots. The two time Pro Bowl quarterback turns 44 this year (that’s about 112 in NFL years) and 2007 will be his 21st season in the NFL.
That kind of longevity is rare in a league where the average is around three and a half years. But a guy like Testaverde has grown wise over the years.
“After two-a-days are over [in training camp], I’ll go back and sign my contract,” said Testaverde.
Smart. Why take a chance at the ripe old age of 44? Wait until after the brutality of two-a-days is finished. After all, he’ll probably only play a few downs in 2007 as the team’s number three quarterback.
But that doesn’t mean he won’t shine in those few downs.
In 2006 he entered 3 games (two of which simply to take a knee) and threw 3 passes, completing 2, including one for a touchdown. That’s a 137.5 quarterback rating, for those of you curious.
And interestingly, if Testaverde does make a few appearances in 2007 and manages to throw four touchdown passes, he’ll surpass the great Joe Montana on the all-time list. What an exclamation on an already impressive career that would be.
Other notable all time rankings: 6th in passing attempts (6529), completions (3693), and yards (45,281).
