An unhappy Larry Johnson may seek a new team

The NFL’s rumor mill continues to churn some juicy Larry Johnson rumors. The most recent of these comes from a local Milwaukee news station whose sports anchor was “told by an NFL source that the Packers are keeping a very close eye on the Larry Johnson situation in Kansas City.”

Obviously, this is still just a rumor and evidence suggesting the Chiefs would like to trade Johnson is hard to find. But with the Packers hoping to contend with the Bears, Vikings, and Lions for the division title, it wouldn’t be surprising if they sent in an offer.

With plenty of available cap space the Packers could easily afford Johnson’s new contract (which will rank among the most lucrative among his peers), which is currently the source of his grief with the Chiefs and the greatest obstacle in the way of many hopeful teams.

The Packers could also acquire Johnson to appease a disgruntled Brett Favre. Adding someone of L.J.’s caliber could not only rebirth some passion within Favre, but it could also create mismatches on defenses, forcing opponents to respect the run.

Will Green Bay actively pursue this deal? I hope so. Adding a top-tier running back to a Packers offense that held back the team in 2006 could be the tipping point in overtaking a division filled with incompetence (I’m looking at you, Matt Millen), rebuilding (Minnesota), and implosion (Chicago). Seeing Favre make the playoffs (and beyond) would be the ultimate sendoff for the great quarterback and something fans could get excited (real excited) about.

And maybe, just maybe, it will revive some of that Lambeau mystique.

I totally agree. LJ is exactly what the Packers need to put some hope and excitment back in the hearts of the Packer Nation. I think a move for Moss would have been a great move to help open up the run for the young unproven talent they have, but without another deep threat to go with Driver, the Pack needs to make a move for a proven back that will keep Defenses honest.
