Will you be drafting Devin Hester?

Devin Hester will be playing offense in 2007 and probably scoring touchdowns; but when will you draft him?

When the Chicago Bears announced that Devin Hester will be playing a role in the team’s offense, fantasy owners tried to digest the information. Hester on offense? What does this mean? How much will he score? When do I draft him?

The idea behind the move is to give the Bears some spark on offense, something Hester definitely brings to the table. His role in the offense will be similar to Reggie Bush; he will line up anywhere he is needed. Sometimes he will be the target, others he will play decoy. Either way, the plan is to keep defenses on their heels and off balance.

But does that mean he’s draftable? It’s a question that deserves serious consideration because, really, can you predict his 2007 season? I don’t think a projection is of much use here because no one really knows how many downs Hester will play. And because he plays such a key role on the team as a return man, it can be assumed he will not play too many downs because of injury risks.

If your league is the rare type that awards players based on all-purpose yards (awards punt returners, kick returners), absolutely Hester is draftable. But aside from that, I wouldn’t be the person who picks up Hester. His scores will be erratic at best, impossible to predict.

What do you think? When will you draft Hester, or will you scratch his name off your “big board?”

No, he’s not who people think he is.
