Goodell drops hammer in Tank’s verdict

Chicago's Tank Johnson has been suspended 8 games for the 2007 season

To avoid breaking precedent, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has once again let the hammer fall hard, this time punishing Chicago defensive tackle Tank Johnson with an eight game suspension. Johnson and fans everywhere have been anticipating Goodell’s ruling. And boy did he not disappoint.

Not that Johnson didn’t deserve the suspension, but this punishment is almost more severe than the eight game-suspension given to Chris Henry. Henry had a frequent history of running into troubles, but Johnson has steered clear for the most part. The gun raid on his house that resulted in 60 days behind bars didn’t exactly bode well for him, but I honestly didn’t think the Commissioner would slap him with such a severe suspension.

This will, if nothing else, scare teams looking at players with a troubled history. From this point forward, any player who is convicted of a semi-serious crime, or is accused for that matter, will face great odds of being suspended. Michael Vick, for example, will face a stiff suspension, even if he is acquitted.

It’s just one more thing fantasy football owners will need to take into account come draft day.
