Green deal still not progressing, despite agent’s offer to mediate

Trent Green will be going to Miami, but when?

The Miami-Kansas City stalemate continues. The question is, Why?

Trent Green took any leverage that Kansas City may have had when he declared that he will not restructure his $7.2 million deal for anyone outside of Miami. The Chiefs cannot afford his contract, and the impasse they have created is sending ripples throughout the NFL and raising questions.

Green went through the process; he requested to test the trade waters before restructuring a deal with Kansas City. When Miami bit, the Chiefs held back. Green had caught a deal he liked, a deal that would put him in the position to start in 2007.

But the Chiefs, with no leverage whatsoever, are delaying the inevitable. If they do not make a deal soon, they will be forced to release Green and receive nothing in return. Green will then inevitably sign with the Dolphins and the Chiefs will have gained nothing but disrespect for treating Green so poorly.

Even attempts made by Green’s agent have failed. He hopes Miami will increase their offer, conditionally.

“I think they’d be willing to conditionalize the sixth-round pick,” said Green’s agent, Jim Steiner, who spoke to the Dolphins as recently as Thursday afternoon. “They could make it higher based on performance during the 2007 season.”

But the Dolphins are content sitting on their offer waiting for Green to be traded.

Time to make the right move, Kansas City, and end this stalemate.
