In arguably the best example of a statement qualifying for Mike and Mike’s “Just Shut Up” award, Clinton Portis stunned everyone — probably even Vick — when he questioned authorities investigating the Michael Vick dog fighting case.
“I don’t know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it’s his property, it’s his dog,” the Washington Redskins’ running back told WAVY-TV in Virginia. “If that’s what he wants to do, do it. I think people should mind their business.”
Quick, someone tell Portis that dogfighting is illegal and punishable by up to a year behind bars because of cruelty to animals!
“I know a lot of back roads that have the dog fighting if you want to go see it,” he said.
Too late.
Certainly, if nothing else, Portis’ comments are good for a laugh. After all, who doesn’t know that dogfighting is illegal? Okay, so teammate Chris Samuels is defending him by saying that the comments were all in good humor.
Unfortunately, Roger Goodell didn’t find his comments very funny.
“I’m extremely disappointed and embarrassed for Clinton Portis,” Goodell said in a written statement following a one-day NFL owners’ meeting. “This does not reflect the sentiments of the Redskins, the NFL or NFL players.”
