Ricky Williams is not the prodigal son, and Miami Dolphins head coach Cam Cameron is not the father welcoming Williams with open arms. In fact, Cameron was very blunt about the entire situation.
“I will not allow our fans to be let down by people that are not on our roster - not again,” Cameron said. “It’s my responsibility not to let that happen. We have the greatest fans in the game, and we’ve got men on our team that we’re going to focus on.”
Cameron’s reaction isn’t exactly surprising. Williams let down those around him, especially fans like me who were actually pulling for him. I’ll admit I had a soft spot that genuinely wanted Williams to make a triumphant return. After all, he was always the misunderstood character with social anxiety and shyness.
But failing another drug test has all but guaranteed Williams won’t be making a return to Miami. Plenty of other suitors are out there, teams that really do need a running back. But the question is, do those teams take a chance on Williams? With his history, another failed drug test would be disastrous. Goodell’s hand would be forced, and Williams would be suspended.
How long? That’s anyone’s guess, but I can promise Goodell won’t make the running back an exception.
