Oakland considers hiring draftnik

Ever wonder why those “experts” who cover the draft from start to finish aren’t working for an NFL team? If they’re truly the best, why not?

Al Davis is asking himself the same question, Why not? According to one source, the Raiders are considering the hire of the NFL Network’s talking head, Mike Mayock. The job in question is “personnel executive” and Mayock would be replacing the soon-to-be-freed Mike Lombardi.

Lombardi was a source of trouble for Art Shell and was accused by the coach to have been leaking anonymous quotes to the media that criticized Shell and his coaching staff.

Mayock has been doing television since 1996, shuffling through several venues, including college basketball reporting. His responsibilities would most likely center around personnel, with a couple people in the organization above him — Al Davis and Lane Kiffin.

The report also adds that NFL.com’s Pat Kirwan is also a potential successor to Lombardi. He maintains a good friendship with USC head coach Pete Carrol. Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin was an assistant at USC before moving on to the Raiders.
