The Atlanta Falcons have decided to try out a new kicker in 2007. Adam Schefter reports the team has agreed to a one-year deal with kicker Billy Cundiff. The selling point, according to Schefter, was the Falcons schedule, which consists of 12 indoor games next season.
Cundiff, 27, has spent four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, but his tenure there ended halfway through the 2005 season when he had a kicking percentage of 62.5% and had missed 3 of 5 field goals between 30-39 yards. He spent last season with the New Orleans Saints and kicked (and missed) only one field goal.
But the Falcons realize that kicker Morten Anderson, a 25 year veteran, simply doesn’t have much left in the tank at age 46. He hasn’t made a field goal longer than 50 yards since 2002 and has kicked only two in that span. And though the team tried out Michael Koenen last season, he is much better suited as a punter. Not to mention that he had 3 kicks blocked and only managed to boot in 3 of the 6 that weren’t.
