Giants Coughlin does not rule out adding Keyshawn

One day after it was reported that the Carolina Panthers had released wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson comes a report from New York Daily News suggesting that the Giants may choose to sign the 35 year old receiver. And though the article itself called it “unlikely,” Tom Coughlin is not ruling anything out.

“Well, let’s put it this way,” Coughlin said yesterday on Sirius NFL Radio. “We study every player that’s available and we’ll do that again in light of the fact that Keyshawn is available. We weren’t necessarily thinking that he would be. Of course we made a move in the draft to help solidify that position as well, so we’ll take a look at that like we do everything else.”

Johnson would add a couple bonuses to the roster. Number one, depth; he is another veteran target for the young — and oft-struggling — Eli Manning. Secondly, Johnson would be a good mentor for wide receiver Steve Smith. Everyone thought he would stick around in Carolina to help groom Dwayne Jarrett, but that didn’t happen. Bringing Johnson in to New York would only help Smith in his maturity and adjustment to the NFL.

Stay tuned.
