An AP press release reports that the Carolina Panthers have opted to release wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. Everyone thought the 35 year old would be allowed to stick around another season to groom rookie Dwayne Jarrett, but the Panthers organization apparently thought differently.

Johnson wants to be a NFL scout in the future — he sat alongside analysts Mel Kiper Jr., Chris Mortenson, and Steve Young on Saturday and Sunday to discuss the draft. He might need to think about those plans sooner than he thought. At 35 years of age, Johnson might struggle to find a suitor willing to pay more than the veteran league minimum. And it would be better for his future if he begins working toward his second career as soon as possible.
