Philadelphia drafting for the future?
When the Philadelphia Eagles were in their war room discussing the routes their team could take with this draft, it seems the majority voted in favor of drafting for 2010 instead of 2007. The most obvious evidence of this came when the Eagles selected quarterback Kevin Kolb in the second round, passing on immediate starters and opting for someone who could play the position in the future.
When asked if the Eagles entered this draft thinking more about the future than the present, head coach Andy Reid replied, “You could probably say that.”
But drafting Kolb makes sense on another level. McNabb is injury prone, a bad characteristic for quarterbacks. Nothing is there to guarantee he won’t go down again in 2007. And after losing backup Jeff Garcia in free agency, the team was smart to draft a quarterback who can fill in for the Pro Bowl quarterback so the team doesn’t go down with him.
