The Chiefs are refusing to budge on the terms to trading Green.
“We have had discussions with Miami, but we value Trent greatly,” GM Carl Peterson told ESPN during its draft-day coverage. “He’s been a starting quarterback in the NFL, a Pro Bowl quarterback with 25,000 yards passing. He’s very valuable to us and this organization. We don’t have any intention on releasing him or letting him go for something that’s not of value. He’s more valuable to us right now than probably anything that Miami or anybody else can do.”
Miami certainly did tie its hands on Saturday when opting to draft wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. of Ohio State with the 9th overall selection. Drafting Quinn would have given the team leverage to make a deal with the Chiefs, but now Miami is reverting to a state of desperation. Their decisions now lie between trading for Green or hoping Daunte Culpepper can stay healthy for an entire season.
In the Dolphins defense, however, the Chiefs are being ridiculous with their demands. Originally demanding a second round choice, the draft is now complete and the Chiefs may be asking for selections in next year’s draft. The Dolphins simply should not commit to those terms unless it is a mid-late round pick. Green will only be playing another season or two before his career is complete and, like Daunte Culpepper, he has injury concerns. Instead, Miami should wait this out because the Chiefs will not be paying Green the $7.2 million contract he demands with both Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard on the roster.
