NFL considers 17th regular season game

The NFL is in its “formative” stages of developing a plan that will institute a 17th regular season game to accommodate its other new plan, games played overseas. One of the league’s greatest strengths is its short season — in comparison with other professional sports — that makes every regular season game competitive. Right now, a regular season loss is the equivalent to 10 consecutive losses by a major league baseball team.

It is understandable, certainly, that the league wants to expand to the international level. And just as understandable, the NFL does not want to alienate its fans, the reason one extra game will be played overseas. This move would also signal the temporary end to the .500 season as we know it. Instead, it would be much more satisfying — and less alienating — if the league would instead test the international waters through playing one week of preseason across the Atlantic (or Pacific, or above/below the border). Sometimes, change just doesn’t seem like the right thing.
