Evidently, Drew Rosehaus is the person spreading rumors that as many as five teams are interested in linebacker Lance Briggs. This report from the Daily Herald says that Chicago general manager Jerry Angelo is neither optimistic a deal will get done soon, nor will he admit to any rumors.
“I’ve not heard anything official from anybody,†Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said during a short break from preparing for this weekend’s draft. “We had our talks with Washington (in March). I haven’t talked to Washington in awhile. So those (reports of other teams being interested) are rumors, and I really can’t speculate on rumors.”
For the Bears to trade Briggs, it will take more than swapping for a very high draft choice (6th overall in exchange for Chicago’s 31st and Briggs), as that is what Washington offered.
“Obviously we didn’t feel that (first offer) was in our picture,†commented Angelo regarding the Washington offer.
And losing a Pro Bowl player like Briggs will present a difficult task of replacing him. Briggs, who threatened to sit out the majority of 2007 because the Bears franchise tagged him, is one of the best players in the NFL at his position. Chicago lacks an immediate replacement and might want to go to the draft with a player or two in mind who can play the weak side.
