Buccaneers GM Bruce Allen announced Tuesday that Shelton Quarles will be released. Quarles, a ten year veteran, has played for the Buccaneers since 1997 after being drafted out of Vanderbilt.
Despite missing four games last season, Quarles still managed to total 104 tackles, his third consecutive season with at least 100. He was out with a knee injury for those four games in 2006, and Allen hinted that health concerns were a reason for his release, though he added that other factors were at play.
“We just feel at this time, not only for today but the future, it’s the right decision,” Allen said. “I don’t think there is a specific-one-issue reason for this.”
Quarles will be missed by a Buccaneers defense which was among the worst in recent history, ranking outside the top 10 in the league in points allowed for the first time since 1995 (ranked 21st).
