Redskins have options; trade with Miami?

The Washington Post reports that some team officials hope the Redskins trade down to gain more picks — they don’t have a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round draft choice.

This presents a bevy of options for the team. If the Redskins do choose to trade the pick — which, unless a talent such as Calvin Johnson slips to them, they probably will — several teams who draft in the top 10 may have their interests piqued. The most notable being Miami.

The Dolphins hope to acquire quarterback Trent Green soon, hopefully before the draft. Unfortunately, it sounds as if the Dolphins and Chiefs have currently reached a stalemate, and the pleas of Green are beginning to sound, loud and clear. If a deal isn’t reached prior to next Saturday, don’t be surprised if Miami tries to wrangle a deal with the Redskins to move up and draft quarterback Brady Quinn.

This deal would make sense for several reasons. One, the Chiefs have asked the Dolphins to part with a second and seventh round draft choice, which is a ridiculous price for a 36 year old quarterback with injury concerns. Miami would be better suited swapping first rounders with the Redskins and giving up an early-mid round (2nd-4th round) draft choice. Washington would gain a draft another draft choice to add depth to its defense while only moving down to 9th overall. Miami, on the other hand, would guarantee the selection of a young quarterback who is well-prepared for the NFL instead of getting one, maybe two good seasons out of Green before his career is finished.

Keep a close eye on how the trade between Kansas City and Miami develops before the draft; its impact — whether it happens or not — could be greater than you think.
