According to a report by kansascity.com, the Kansas City Chiefs met with at least four high profile running backs this week at Arrowhead Stadium: Marshawn Lynch, widely considered the second best runner in the draft; Ohio State’s Antonio Pittman, Florida State’s Lorenzo Booker, and Louisville’s Kolby Smith.
Fantasy owners, don’t get too worried; it’s doubtful that the team is looking to replace Larry Johnson anytime soon, as the article seems to hint.
Instead, it’s more likely that the Chiefs are merely searching for a runner to give Larry Johnson some breathers. Johnson led the NFL in carries last season, averaging 26 per game and setting an NFL record in the process. No running back can consistently handle that number of carries over a career, and the Chiefs are simply being wise enough to realize that.
But they don’t necessarily need a top tier runner to address that need. Certainly, the team needs someone who can fill in and even start if an emergency arises; but that doesn’t mean they need to either trade up to make a move or use an early draft choice. As Kiper Jr. says, “never draft for depth.” Instead, expect the team to use a early - mid-round pick to acquire someone.
