Williams reinstatement unlikely to occur before draft

Sun-Sentinel.com reports that running back Ricky Williams will probably not be re-entering the NFL until after the NFL Draft (April 28-29). Williams recently applied for reinstatement and has been awaiting word from the commissioner.

Williams left the NFL during the prime of his career in 2003 after it was rumored he had failed a fourth drug test for marijuana (it turned out to be another substance). He had one short stint in the league in 2005 as a backup in Miami and spent a year with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL in 2006.

But even if he passes reinstatement, teams will be hesitant to sign him not only because he has not been a starter since 2003.

League commissioner Roger Goodell has recently issued stricter policies to combat “character issues” in the league, and he has already dished out serious punishment to two players — Pacman Jones and Chris Henry. The latter received an 8 game suspension while Jones is appealing a full season suspension.

Ricky Williams will be watched closely by league officials, possibly shying teams away from signing him; however, it would not be a surprise if he rejoined the Dolphins. They need a backup running back and Williams enjoyed success at that position in 2005.
