Urlacher fined $100k by “No Fun League” for wearing cap

Have you ever wondered why players in the NFL never — ever — wear apparell that doesn’t have the Reebok logo on it?

Brian Urlacher learned the hard way that sponsorship means a lot more the league than it does to its players. Urlacher was recently fined $100 thousand — that’s a record, by the way — for wearing an unauthorized cap during a pre-Super Bowl media event.

The standard fine for uniform violations is $10 thousand, but the Super Bowl is another story. Because sponsors pay millions of dollars to sponsor the game — $2.5 million for 30 seconds of commercial air-time — the NFL drastically jacks the fine; 10 times higher, in fact. Pulling out a calculator, that’s about 2.5% of Urlacher’s $4 million salary.

So, next time you see Urlacher, expect him to be wearing something that’s a little more, I don’t know, NFL-approved.
