The Miami Herald reports that Miami and Kansas City are struggling to come to terms with a deal that would send quarterback Trent Green to Miami in exchange for a draft choice or two. Kansas City wants a second round draft choice; Miami doesn’t want to give that much up.

”I told Randy that they made a great trade with New England,” Chiefs GM Carl Peterson said, referring to a recent deal that sent receiver Wes Welker to the Patriots. “They got for what we would consider a third wide receiver and kick-return specialist second- and seventh-round draft picks. I told him that I think a starting quarterback is worth that.

“Now we need to work toward something that’s fair. We’ll talk again this week. Whether it gets done before the draft or not, I can’t say. It may happen this week, or it may not happen until after the draft.”

First of all, Carl Peterson, Wes Walker is a #2 receiver on your Chiefs who showcase one of the worst groups in the league. Secondly, a quarterback who has extreme injury concerns and might be around for one season — two if the Dolphins are lucky –  is simply not worth a second rounder. A third rounder, yes.

The problem lies in that both teams want to get a deal done, but if one isn’t done before the start of the draft next Saturday (April 28), the entire process may fall apart; and Miami may resort to trading to a higher slot in the draft to pick quarterback Brady Quinn. Drafting Quinn would destroy any leverage the Chiefs currently have because Miami will no longer have that desperate look in their eye, and the Dolphins might lose interest in taking a chance with an old (by NFL standards) broken down quarterback who might not give them more than one good season.

Expect the Chiefs to come down on their asking price and the Dolphins to meet them halfway — before the draft.
