It’s official: the next NFL star to be featured on the best-selling video game franchise of all time will be Vince Young. And while Young is embracing his newfound fame and the honor of being featured, you know that part of him is a bit nervous.
The Madden video game series has been notorious for the “curse” it has put on past cover-stars. Originally, players were not featured on the game’s cover. Instead, John Madden appeared wearing a headset and a smile. But in 2001, the EA Sports marketing people decided to feature athletes instead, and the curse was born.
Since then, seven athletes (Eddie George, Daunte Culpepper, Marshall Faulk, Michael Vick, Ray Lewis, Donovan McNabb, and Shaun Alexander) have appeared and been injured the same season. While Young might not acknowledge the “curse” as being anything more than a myth, a certain part of his psyche will be affected. And he is coming off a great season in 2006, typical of past cover-stars.
Madden ‘08 is due to hit stores in August. And fantasy players, you’ve been warned.
