The move to make Chiefs’ quarterback Trent Green a Dolphin has been going on for some time now, and it finally appears to be in its last stage. Sun-Sentinel.com reports that a trade between Miami and Kansas City should be completed this week.

Miami had problems at the quarterback position throughout last season, stemming from a Daunte Culpepper injury and culminating with sub-par play by Joey Harrington. The latter has departed for Atlanta to play second fiddle behind Michael Vick while it appears Culpepper will be the next odd man out.

Still recovering from a knee surgery that occurred more than four months ago, Culpepper missed the opening voluntary minicamps. There have been rumors he could be destined for Oakland with his career as a starter in Miami quickly fading. Owner Al Davis loves his laser arm that makes deep throws seem effortless. If a trade doesn’t happen and the Dolphins are forced to release Culpepper because of his $5.5 million contract, expect the Raiders to make an effort to sign him.

But this trade for Green could also affect the way the draft plays out. The Dolphins may not make as strong an effort to acquire Brady Quinn, the quarterback many project the team will make a push to draft. Though they may select him should he fall to their position at 9th overall, Miami might not trade up to draft him because they will not feel the same desperation as they would if they didn’t have Green.

And if Miami lets Culpepper go and he leaves for Oakland, the Raiders will most likely opt to draft phenom Calvin Johnson. Al Davis loves his combination of speed, athleticism, and size, not to mention that JaMarcus Russell’s services will no longer be necessary.

Keep an eye out for how Miami handles this situation and whether or not the Raiders pursue Culpepper.
