Lynch to visit Packers next week

PackersNews.com reports that draft prospect Marshawn Lynch is scheduled for a visit with Green Bay next week. Lynch, who played running back at Cal, was a Heisman candidate last season when he combined (rushing/receiving) for 1684 yards and 15 scores. He is widely considered the second best running back in the draft, behind phenom Adrian Peterson.

Green Bay could use a running back after losing long-time Packer Ahman Green earlier this offseason. Lynch runs strong but lacks elusiveness, one of his main criticisms. But he could definitely help out the Packers, who pick 16th overall.

But he may not necessarily fall that far. Despite not being a top 20 overall prospect in some minds, there are other teams with even more pressing needs at the running back position: Buffalo and Tennessee, neither of which have much chance of seeing Peterson slip to where they pick at 12 and 19, respectively.

Buffalo has no one to replace Willis McGahee (Baltimore), and they are desperately looking for a replacement, eying both Corey Dillon and Michael Turner. Both players would help, but there is no proof that either could handle a full season’s load. Turner has rarely started games, playing second fiddle to fantasy god LaDainian Tomlinson. And Corey Dillon has injury and major speed concerns.

Tennessee is also looking at both prospects, and there is no saying that the Titans and Bills won’t split the backs, sending Turner to one team and Dillon to the other. In fact, there is good probability that will be the case. But Tennessee especially needs a runner with speed, someone like Turner or Lynch. Unfortunately, if the Titans want to draft Lynch, they will need to trade up (assuming Green Bay plans to choose him) because they pick after the Packers.
