The Miami Herald reports that quarterback Daunte Culpepper’s future in Miami is not set in stone. Culpepper is still nursing from a knee surgery and has now revealed that it could take at least 2 more months before his recovery nears its end.
Unfortunately for the team, however, Daunte Culpepper is the only quarterback on the team — at this point — qualified to start when the season begins. Last season’s starter more most of the season, Joey Harrington, has left for Atlanta where he will begin next season backing up Michael Vick.
The Dolphins have tried to make a push to sign veteran Trent Green as an option, but there has been little progress because the team is in serious cap trouble. They still need to fill other positions, such as the left side of the line, a backup for Ronnie Brown, and a third wide receiver. Not to mention that Cleveland has reportedly shown interest in Green, and the Browns can better afford his hefty salary.
Another option the Dolphins are seriously considering is drafting quarterback Brady Quinn. But because, once again, Cleveland is showing interest in him — not to mention the Vikings — the Dolphins may need to trade up to select Quinn.
But that isn’t to suggest that Culpepper’s immediate future with the team is certain. In fact, Oakland has been rumored to be interested in his throwing strength — Al Davis loves his strong-armed quarterbacks. A trade is possible, if not likely to occur.
Unless it does, however, Culpepper will remain a Dolphin until the team finds a suitable replacement or wields a draft day trade that would move them into position to select either Quinn or JaMarcus Russell.
