The Washington Post reports that LSU’s top prospect, JaMarcus Russell, met with the Redskins Wednesday as a sort of “meet every draft prospect” ordeal. In fact, head coach Joe Gibbs was certain to let everyone know that, especially the team’s young quarterback Jason Campbell.
“It has nothing to do with Jason,” Gibbs said. “We brought in every player in the first round, just about. . . . You’re doing your homework. You’re doing your due diligence. . . . We feel like we’re set at quarterback.”
There is no reason to suspect that Gibbs is considering a move that would allow the Redskins to move into position to draft Russell, especially after making a commitment to Campbell. This appears to be nothing more than an ordinary team-prospect meeting and there is little reason to read into it any further than that. The team has needs which are more pressing than that of quarterback.
