There can’t be too many good days for Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson as he serves a 120-day sentence in Cook County Jail for violating probation on a weapons charge. But Tuesday must have been particularly hard.
The NFL announced its new, stricter personal-conduct policy and immediately suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam ”Pacman” Jones and Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, barring Jones for the entire 2007 season and Henry for eight games. Both players are repeat offenders, the group targeted by commissioner Roger Goodell when he instituted the new policy.
Johnson, also a repeat offender, likely will have some bad news waiting after he serves his jail term, which could be halved by good behavior.
Johnson screwed up — bad. With more weaponry than a, er, tank in his house without an Illinois permit, Johnson set himself up.
Goodell is not treating any of the suspensions with a grain of salt, and his harshness will likely passed on — not undeserved — to Johnson. There’s no evidence to suggest the commissioner will overlook his offenses, especially when considering that Tank served jail time.
But expect a lighter sentence to befall Johnson, as the commissioner is prepared to have a sit-down with the Bears defensive tackle before passing judgment.
