Story at PackersNews.com:
The Green Bay Packers announced this morning that they’ve signed linebacker Nick Barnett to a long-term contract extension.
General Manager Ted Thompson made the announcement in a statement released by the team.
Barnett, 25, has led the Packers in tackles three of his four seasons. The 6-foot-2, 232-pounder is going into his fifth season with the Packers.
He was to make $1.95 million in base salary this season, which was the final season of the contract he signed as a rookie.
Good news for fans of the Green and Gold, Barnett is signed for the long haul. This means that the Packers now have two young linebackers — the other being A.J. Hawk, who is entering his sophomore season — for the long haul.
It also means that not all is lost in Green Bay. There were rumors that Barnett would be leaving the team either this season or next. Those rumors began specifically after he put his nightclub up for sale.
But with a new contract extension, the defense is looking even better and more secure. The defensive backs could use more depth and the team might consider adding some veteran leadership to the linebacker position, but those in Packerland can rest assured, there team will not be enduring another 4-12 season any time soon. In fact, Green Bay could make a run for the playoffs next season, perhaps becoming the NFC’s dark horse.
