Since the start of 2006, more than 50 NFL players have been arrested, prompting Commissioner Roger Goodell to draft a revised conduct policy that will dictate harsher punishment for disgraceful deportment.
According to people familiar with the new policy, which is expected to be unveiled within days, one-year suspensions will be mandated for some violations. Stronger stipulations for mandatory counseling probably will be attached to applications for reinstatement.
NFL player salaries averaged $1.78 million in 2006; the rookie minimum was $275,000.
“Fines are such a small part of a player’s total compensation. They don’t pay attention to it,” Houston Texans owner Robert McNair says. “A $50,000 fine, (it’s like), ‘I spent that last night when I got arrested. That’s what I gave one girl.’ “
During NFL meetings last month, Goodell said he was pleased with feedback from owners, executives and coaches, which reaffirmed his belief in little tolerance and league discipline not linked to judicial proceedings for repeat offenders.
While this is not necessarily unexpected or “new” news, it’s still great to hear that the commissioner is taking a more firm approach to the situation. No doubt there is character issue in the league today, and with his latest idea — a 6-player advisory council — Goodell is making huge strides toward hopefully eliminating or, at the very least, cutting back on the number of offenses which occur on such a seemingly regular basis.
DUI’s seem to rank among the most prominent, and crimes seem to be growing in severity as the years press on. Pacman Jones being present during a Vegas shooting, for example, is a very grave matter. No doubt he most likely will — and should — receive a heavy suspension that will make him an example of all players.
Roger Goodell is cementing his place in history as an intelligent commissioner, one who, rather than simply dictating law, has gone to the players for ideas and suggestions. And for that we thank you, Commissioner.
