Full story at Boston Herald:
Former Patriots RB Corey Dillon appears to be waiting to make his move.
According to agent Steve Feldman, a reported visit to the Titans for this week is still in the planning stages right now. The Bills and Rams are still in the mix for Dillon’s services. Feldman said simply that “He just hasn’t gotten on a plane yet.†The Eagles also have expressed some interest.
The one thing that could be holding things up a bit right now is the presence of Chargers RB Michael Turner on the block. Turner is a bellcow-in-the-making who’s stuck behind all-universe talent LaDainian Tomlinson, and San Diego’s fielding offers for the restricted free agent. Two of the teams in the running for Dillon, the Bills and Titans (who lost Willis McGahee and Travis Henry, respectively), are after Turner right now.
Dillon might be the slowest runner in the game today, but his bruising style still makes him effective on goal line and short yardage situations. As the article states, he has garnered interest from at least four different teams.
Philadelphia, while being a team built around the pass — and they show little sign of changing — could use a power back like Dillon to at least mix things up.
The Rams need someone to shoulder more of the load — Steven Jackson had 346 carries last season, about 89% of the team’s total carries — and Dillon certainly could help. His services would allow the team to give Jackson some much needed breathers in order to keep him fresh as games carry on.
Tennessee needs a runner to help LenDale White out after Travis Henry’s departure to Denver. But while Dillon would help, both he and White are similar in that they run for power. Having both might not work out to Tennessee’s delight, though the team could still use each. Unfortunately, there would be no “thunder and lightning” approach; rather, “thunder and… more thunder.”
Finally, the Bills would probably find the most use for Dillon. Though he may not be an every-down back, the team desperately needs to find someone, and they have little leverage to bluff San Diego into lowering the value on Michael Turner after they all but surrendered their running game this offseason trading Willis McGahee to Baltimore. Anthony Thomas and Shaud Williams are not contenders for the top spot on the depth chart and Buffalo should be feeling desperation creeping in.
And Dillon is smart to wait until the Turner deal is finalized. It will mean that other teams will have their leverage limited (i.e. No Turner means no other significant option).
