Cutler offers some advice to Quinn and Russell: relax

Jay Cutler has some unsolicited advice for JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn in the days leading up to the NFL draft.

“Relax and enjoy the moment,” Cutler said Tuesday.

Russell, of Louisiana State, and Quinn, of Notre Dame, are considered top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft, April 28 and 29 in New York.

“I feel for those guys because it’s such a long period” between the end of the season and the draft, said Cutler, who became Denver’s starter last season after the Broncos made him their first pick and 11th overall in the 2006 draft.

“Four months of getting broken down, being picked apart and people just trying to find fault with those two guys,” he said.

Cutler does know a thing or two about the weeks leading up to the draft, though his advice is nothing new. Every player who has been through the process seems to recite the same lines: just be patient, don’t worry, etc. It seems that the only way a draftee can overcome the anxiety is to experience it for himself.

For Cutler, that meant waiting until the 11th overall pick, some two and a half hours after the draft began, before he received his phone call that Denver was trading up to draft him. I imagine that nerves would and anxiety would be on high at that point, just waiting and not knowing until it happens who will draft you.

Both Quinn and Russell will face similar circumstances, and both would do well to simply heed Cutler’s advice: “Get relaxed because you’re going to get to a good team and do your thing.”
