The Indianapolis Colts have looked into adding a veteran running back to complement Joseph Addai.
The agent for free agent Kevan Barlow said he has discussed his client with the Colts, who are looking to replace Dominic Rhodes in their backfield. Rhodes, whose tag-team effort with Addai was instrumental in the Colts’ run to a Super Bowl victory last season, signed with Oakland in March.
“We’ve talked some. But nothing’s imminent,” Doug Hendrickson, Barlow’s agent, said Monday. “Right now, they want to get through the draft and see where they are.”
As a policy, the Colts don’t comment on signing speculation.
Dominic Rhodes certainly helped the Colts rushing game last season when he accounted for 36% of the team’s yards. He especially helped during the postseason, leading the team in rushing with 306 yards. But 2006 was also when Joseph Addai came into his own, breaking the 1000 yard barrier and averaging an impressive 4.8 yards per carry. Addai also caught another 40 passes for 325 yards and finished the season with 8 scores (rushing and receiving).
Adding another veteran to the squad — Rhodes was lost to Oakland this offseason — will continue to aid Addai in his growth and adjustments. Barlow has a career yards per carry average of 3.9. And he has averaged 14 games played and 5 scores (rushing) per season during his career.
