Story at Denver Post:
The Broncos announced today that coach Mike Shanahan has signed a three-year contract extension through the 2011 season.
Shanahan will begin his 13th season as head coach of the Broncos this year and is the second-longest tenured head coach in the NFL.
This season will be Shanahan’s 20th on the Broncos’ coaching staff, tying him with former assistant Joe Collier for the most years of service with the team.
Makes sense. After all, Shanahan has won two Super Bowls — though not since the Elway era ended, as most fans will remind you — and his overall record with the team is 123-69 (.641) in the regular season. Unfortunately, his postseason record since 1999 (Elway retired) is 1-4.
But with Jay Cutler on board for the foreseeable future, Shanahan has a young quarterback with a strong arm. Not to mention that defensive coordinator Jim Bates forces teams to respect his squad on the other side of the ball.
Watch out for Denver in 2007; they’ve been 42-22 over the past four seasons with Jake Plummer at the helm for the majority of that time. But with additions like Travis Henry, Brandon Stokley, and Daniel Graham this offseason, the offense should receive the spark they so desperately needed — and never found — last season.
