The New York Jets are scheduled to host Patriots cornerback Randall Gay on a free agent visit that starts tonight and extends through tomorrow.
Article ToolsGay, who has played three NFL seasons and is a restricted free agent, has been participating in the Patriots’ offseason program. He was tendered a one-year, $1.3 million contract this offseason but has yet to sign the tender, making him free to visit other teams.
Gay is the second New England defensive back who could be lost this offseason. Though not nearly as great a loss as Asante Samuel could be, Gay’s departure could actually offer one benefit.
At this time, the Patriots do not have a second round draft choice; but they are entitled to one if they do not match another team’s offer for Gay. If they do match, they retain him and his contract.
But do the “benefits” actually outweigh the consequences?
As stated earlier, the team is already in a jam because of Asante Samuel — Samuel has threatened to hold out the entire season unless he is traded. If either of those two scenarios comes to life, Gay could be the next logical replacement for Samuel. Not having a corner with experience and ability would only hinder the Patriots, though it is possible the team could draft someone later this month.
The team will need someone to replace Samuel unless he has an unlikely change of heart. Gay certainly fits the bill, and unless the Patriots are willing to plod through another season — one which their recent history has shown is not without injuries — without a good corner and a lack of depth at the position, it’s time to keep a closer eye on Gay and make sure this corner doesn’t get away.
