Full story at Denver Post:
The Broncos are looking for a veteran defensive tackle. A name Denver likely will consider is Carolina’s Kris Jenkins. The Charlotte Observer has reported he is being shopped.
Denver liked Jenkins when he came out in the 2001 draft. He weighs about 340 pounds, which Bates likes in his tackles.
Jenkins could cost a midround draft pick. The Broncos have two third-round picks.
I’ll buy that for a couple reasons.
One, the team needs a big man in the middle. The run defense was fine against most teams, but when it came to playing against runner like LaDainian Tomlinson or Larry Johnson, things were not so good.
Denver finished 1-3 against the two runners’ teams and surrendered an average of about 123 yards and 1 touchdown to those two backs alone. And the team will meet San Diego and Kansas City at least four times this season; simple math says that is 1/4 of the regular season. And a meeting in the playoffs? Ouch.
Finally, two, Carolina is very willing to unload Jenkins on whoever makes the best offer. Denver is in the position, as the article says, to trade a mid-rounder to acquire the Pro Bowler. And Denver is expected to otherwise draft someone early on; why not trade a pick for a proven veteran Pro Bowl tackle like Jenkins?
